AFRO-BUTOH WORKSHOP: Dance Initiation
(conducted by South African choreographer - Tebby W.T. RAMASIKE)
Description of the workshop: (this workshop is open to the general public, everybody is welcome!)
The working title for this workshop, “SKIN......LIFE......SOUL!”, will focus on a genre of the elements of life, the senses of the body and natures' energy. This workshop will look into the spirituality of Butoh and African dance genres, by exploring some of their elements and principles, basing that on different cultural norms and animal imagery.
In this workshop we will work with open improvisation structures in relation to given themes, tasks, elements and the sphere of the day. We will work together as a group, as well as creating solos, duets, trios, etc, using improvisation as a vehicle to create movement phrases in an open pathway that builds up to a journey to discover explore, gather and compose a “complete” set of movement or dance phrases. Different imagery focus will be drawn from that of animals, day-to-day lifestyles, sound, silence, the nature and
spirituality, individually or collectively. This workshop takes a form of a spiritual journey into the infinity!
Requirements:
– Participants are requested to bring easy-flowing clothes to be able to move in freely, to free the energy and the spirit of the body, mind and soul. Flat-sole, comfortable shoes are requested (no high heels), though bare feet or socks are preferred.
– Participants are requested to bring any symbolic element that they means something to them. It can be anything, a ring, a photo, a book, text, song, stick, stone, flower, blanket, etc.
